Teen Empowerment:  A Motivational Summit (T.E.A.M.S.) kicked off Cleveland Public Library’s Fit for Life:  Get Active @ Your Library campaign.  More than 300 teens attended the Summit, where rapper Mike Jones spoke about youth empowerment.  The local hip-hop radio station Z107.9 broadcast live at the event, grabbing the attention of teens across the city.

You can’t have a healthy body without a healthy mind and T.E.A.M.S. stressed this principle.  Stress management workshops gave teens tools for handling anxiety, as well as, what else?  Free stuff!  Fit for Life-brand stress balls and wrist bands were handed out and participants were entered in a drawing to win flag football kits, mini trampolines, exercise balls, and Fit for Life t-shirts and backpacks.

At T.E.A.M.S., teens participated in fitness workshops with Cavalier Girls Dancers, Kristin and Natalie.  The Cavalier Girls, who perform during the Cleveland Cavaliers basketball games, stressed staying fit by eating well, drinking lots of water and exercising.  Then, it was time to get up and dance!  Kristin and Natalie took the class through warm-ups and a short routine.  Worn out as everyone was by the end, the lesson was learned: fitness can be fun!

The hugely successful summit got teens psyched about the fitness-packed season ahead.  Kick-boxing and Pilates workshops, led by the local YMCA, are already underway and as the year progresses, Cleveland’s Fit for Life will also offer opportunities for teens to join online chats, where they can direct questions to health experts like MetroHealth Hospital’s Dr. Robert Needlman and nutritionist Carrie Wert.

In addition to all of the great physical exercise offered at the summit, Owner and Chef, Pat LeGrand, of the diabetic-friendly restaurant A Touch of Sugar came to speak at the library.  Pat, who has been featured on the Food Network, discussed how the “diabetic diet” could be right for everyone.  She gave meal suggestions and taught teens to make a healthy pasta salad.  Z107.9 broadcast live once again, and DJ Robin Simone spoke to teens about the importance of health in her own life.
